Guelph's Best Martial Arts school
A Guelph jiu-jitsu school for the whole family
Royal City Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu and self-defence school in Guelph, Ontario. Guelph had 143,740 residents in 2021, per Statistics Canada.
The head instructor is Professor Rob Veltman. The school says he holds a 5th-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and calls him one of the sport's pioneers in Canada. Its website describes more than 40 years in the grappling arts, starting with wrestling at age 8 and moving on to judo, where he holds a shodan.
The website also states he was the first person to earn a black belt under the Moroney brothers. He trained with them at the Grappling Arts Academy in Woodbridge, Ontario.
Kids' classes, adult training and women's-only mats
The school runs classes for little ones, teens and adults, and it names women's-only sessions too. The youngest students work on coordination and confidence, the school says. Teens get an active outlet and a chance to make friends, while adults come for a hard workout and self-defence they can actually use.
The doors stay open until 8:30 PM six days a week, with a short midday window on Sunday.
The gym holds a 4.8 rating across 66 Google reviews. Reviewers talk most about how welcoming it feels from the very first class. Parents often mention patient instructors and kids who look forward to every session, and several people point out how clean and well run the space is.
New to Guelph and curious about grappling? The school invites newcomers to come in for a trial class, so you can step onto the mats and try a session before signing up.

Amazing place to train. I had the honor of learning from Prof Veltman. A warm welcome with a nice group of students ranging in experience, and competitive but friendly rolls. Prof Veltman is a really special coach, both in his technique but also his warmth and care for everyone. I'll be back next time I'm in Guelph!
Both my daughter and I have had a great time training here. We are both new to BJJ / martial arts. Can’t say enough good about Professor Rob and the other instructors (and Mary!). The atmosphere at the gym is friendly and encouraging. The kids classes are dynamic and fun, and it’s clear that the kids are having a blast. My daughter is always eager for class even when she has had a busy day, which to me is the biggest indicator that they are doing something right here. The adult classes are a great workout, and the instructors are very supportive and friendly.
Absolutely the best . Our sons conference has grown tremendously. All the coaches and professors are great with the kids
